Tashi Morup
Projects Director - Leh Arts and Media Organisation (LAMO)
Tashi Morup is Projects Director of the Ladakh Arts and Media Organisation, Leh, first
joining in 2009. His work largely focuses on media related areas such as photography and
film. His areas of interest concerning Ladakh include the environment especially water, and the impact of development and tourism; as well as music from the region.
Tashi has a postgraduate in Mass Communication from Punjab University, Chandigarh and another postgraduate in Journalism from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). He has worked as a journalist for many years, first as a staff reporter for the Pioneer newspaper in Delhi and then as the Managing Editor of the magazine Ladags Melong (Mirror of Ladakh).
He later went on to start his own weekly newspaper, Magpie. Today Tashi continues to freelance and write for Down To Earth, Daily Excelsior, Kashmir Times and PTI amongst others.
He has researched and written extensively on water and glaciers in Ladakh, especially on
their impact in Leh town. He has made a film on music in Old Town, Leh, and several short
films on the area for LAMO. Tashi has published several articles in national and
international books and journals, and brought out a book to commemorate the centenary
celebrations of the 19 th Kushok Bakula Rinpoche, Monk, Politician and Statesman (LAMO
2017). He is one of the core members of Vikalp Sangam, a national federation of
environmental groups, and at the local level he holds key positions in Ladakh Cultural
Forum and International Association of Ladakh Studies. He has given presentations on
different aspects of Ladakh including water, music, environment, development and tourism
amongst others, at national and international conferences.
